March News & Notes

~ Last month, I said that I had a good January. I was feeling good about my game, and wondered why I had to bother working so many hours when I could be making money playing poker. But in February, not so much.

I'm not going to bore you with a bunch of stats like I did last month. Instead, I will just give you one stat, 2/22. In the 22 donkaments I played in February, I cash in two of them. I also finished the month of January going zero for my last five donkaments, so I'm actually 2 for my last 27.

Most of it has been normal tourney variance. Things like coolers, lost coin flips, the BB waking up with a big hand at the wrong time, doing a high variance play at the wrong time, doing everything else at the wrong time. The problem with a bad run in tournaments is that it's really difficult to determine how much is bad luck and how much is bad play. I'm not gonna say that I've done everything perfectly, but this run has been much more lack of luck rather than lack of skill.

On other poker fronts, February was still a lousy month. The few cash games I played (mostly Omaha-8) didn't go well. Overall, I lost almost as much as I won in January, but a chunk of that was due to tilting off $500 in the Pit one Saturday night.

~ March is Tournament Month in Reno, with three different tournament series around town. I'll be participating by grinding these tournaments, which are running on Sundays.

Today @ GSR: 12n $240 NLHE & 5pm $240 Omaha-8
03/11 @ GSR: 12n $235 NLHE (6-Max $50 Bounties)
03/18 @ Atlantis: 12n $240 NLHE ($25 Bounties)
03/25 @ Atlantis: 12n $130 NLHE ($25 Bounties)

I won't be doing any Live Blogging, as none of these are worthy of that status, but I will do Running Logs for each one. Hopefully, some of them will be worthy of being published due to being interesting, lengthy, or having a big pile of money at the end.

~ I'm temped to do this last one as a separate post, so I can go on a proper rant, but I'll try to keep it short and to the point. As I've previously mentioned, my favorite daily donkament in Reno is the $95 Cash Me Out at the Peppermill. It used to run three nights a week, but was cut back to just Wednesday nights in January. I've been hearing that they were considering dropping it all together due to lack of attendance, as this week's had only 18 players.

Well, the Peppermill has changed there daily donkament schedule again, and I picked up a copy last night. Not only has the Cash Me Out disappeared, but they have also cut the three $115 that ran on Friday nights and Saturdays. Those were not replaced with anything, so the Peppermill has just 11 daily donkaments. The breakdown is seven $45, two $55, and two $65 (a $35 + $30 AddOn on Sunday 1pm, and $65 Bounty ($5) on Wednesday night that replaces the Cash Me Out). So the biggest poker room in Reno has daily tournaments that don't go over $65. Pathetic.

It's just as bad at other room around town. It seems the Atlantis has stopped all their evening tournaments, leaving the $80 Bounty on Sundays 11am as their biggest donkament. Grand Sierra's biggest donkament is $80 on Friday & Saturday nights.

What the hell is wrong with this town? I was already planning on reducing the number of $45 tournaments because I'm sick of them, and focusing on grinding the other ones. But now it seems there's nothing else in this pathetic town.

I wonder if there are any mailman opening in Las Vegas?

(Just kidding)

(Sort of)

Not sure if you have the space for this... I'm guessing not... but I'll ask anyway. You seem to know enough of the tournament regulars in Reno. Why not host a higher buy-in tournament every weekend? 2 tables. No casino rake. No dealer tipping. The RPMG?

Just a thought.

No, I don't have the space in my little apartment for any hosting. Hopefully, I will be buying a home in the fall.

I seriously doubt I would get back into home poker. But if the casinos keep pissing me off, then you never know.
